History & facts
The rough piece is moldavite, a tektite formed about 14.8 million years ago by a meteorite impact in the Czech Republic. The cut piece is helenite, a man-made glass fused from volcanic ash from the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, Washington, at about 2,700°F. Its green color comes from iron and trace chromium and copper in the ash. Hardness 5.5 Mohs. Also called Mount St. Helens obsidian and Gaia stone.
